Dame Alison Carnwath, chairman of Land Securities and the FTSE 100's only woman chair, says companies would benefit not only economically, but also from a continuity of culture point of view, from holding onto their best women and allowing them to return after bringing up their children. She advocates a maternity leave of up to six years.
